CBCT and OPG imaging in Airoli

The Dental Hut has in-house cone-beam CT and panoramic OPG. Imaging is used when extra 2D or 3D detail is likely to change diagnosis or planning—not as a scan for every visit.

Quick answer

CBCT is a 3D cone-beam scan of teeth and jaws. An OPG is a 2D panoramic X-ray of the full mouth. Both can be taken at The Dental Hut in Airoli when they are clinically indicated. A clinical examination still comes first. This is dental imaging, not a hospital medical CT.

What is CBCT and what is OPG?

Dentists use extra-oral scans when a mirror and a small film cannot answer the question. The two common formats here are OPG and CBCT.

What is a CBCT scan?

Cone-beam computed tomography rotates around the head to reconstruct a 3D volume. It may show bone height and width, nerve canals, sinus walls, unerupted teeth and some root-canal anatomy. It is not a substitute for medical CT when extra-oral pathology needs hospital imaging.

What is an OPG X-ray?

An orthopantomogram shows upper and lower teeth, jaws and some sinus outline in one 2D image. It is useful as an overview of wisdom teeth, mixed dentition, large restorations and overall jaw relationships. Many questions do not need a 3D scan after an OPG.

When imaging may help

These are common reasons a dentist may prescribe an OPG or CBCT. They are not a list of conditions the scan always diagnoses, and they are not a reason to request imaging without an examination.

Dental implants

3D bone height, width and nearby structures when an implant is being planned.

Wisdom teeth

Impaction path and, when needed, how close roots sit to a nerve.

Orthodontics

Unerupted teeth and jaw relationships as part of records—not a substitute for examination.

Full-mouth planning

Supporting records when several teeth or both jaws are being planned together.

Jaw and sinus context

Anatomy next to teeth that may affect a dental plan. Extra-oral disease may still need medical imaging.

Selected jaw-joint or facial-pain questions may be discussed in clinic. The Dental Hut is not a hospital TMJ or ENT service.

CBCT vs OPG

The appropriate option depends on the clinical question, not on which image looks more detailed.

Smaller intraoral films remain useful for decay and periapical questions. See dental X-ray when a single-tooth image would change care.

What the visit involves

Why a scan

The clinical question is defined first so you are not scanned without a reason.

Before

Wear clothes without a large necklace. Mention pregnancy, difficulty standing still, or previous imaging so repeats are not taken without a reason.

During

The rotation takes a short time. Staying still reduces blur. You can ask to pause if you feel unsteady.

After

There is no recovery from the scan itself. Interpretation is discussed in the same clinic for many visits.

Repeats

Repeat CBCT is uncommon unless something material has changed. Keep copies if you move clinic.

Why imaging is available in this clinic

What in-house scans can mean

One clinic visit in many cases

When a scan is indicated, many patients at The Dental Hut can complete imaging without travelling to a separate centre.

Read with the examination

The dentists who examined you interpret the scan in context. A pretty volume is not a diagnosis on its own.

Used for planning, not marketing

CBCT may assist implant channels, some impactions and selected endodontic questions. It is not offered as a package for curiosity.

Things to consider

CBCT is more dose than a small film

Dose is kept as low as reasonably achievable for the diagnostic task. The clinic does not claim zero radiation or “child-safe” scans as a slogan.

Not a hospital medical CT

Extra-oral pathology, medical sinus disease or non-dental trauma may still need hospital imaging.

Movement and metal

Fidgeting blurs the volume. Earrings, hair clips and some restorations can create artefacts.

What can affect imaging cost?

Fees are quoted after examination.

  • Whether an OPG, a small film or CBCT is indicated
  • The field of view required for the clinical question
  • Whether imaging is part of a wider treatment plan
  • Whether a previous scan can be reused

Frequently asked questions

CBCT (cone-beam computed tomography) reconstructs a 3D volume of teeth, bone, nerve canals and nearby sinuses. It is used for selected questions—not as a screening test for every patient.

An OPG (orthopantomogram) is a 2D panoramic X-ray of the teeth and jaws. It is often enough for a broad survey of teeth, wisdom teeth and jaw relationships.

An OPG is a 2D panoramic picture. CBCT is a 3D volume. CBCT involves more radiation than a small film and is used when extra detail should change treatment.

Many indicated scans can be taken at The Dental Hut in Airoli. Your dentist still decides which image, if any, is needed.

The better scan answers the clinical question with the least necessary exposure. Pretty 3D pictures are not a reason to scan.
